Junior / Mid-Level Layout & Matchmove Artist

The Layout & Matchmove Artist is responsible for establishing the technical foundation of each shot through precise camera tracking, scene reconstruction, and layout setup.

With a strong eye for detail and spatial accuracy, you translate live-action footage into reliable 3D environments—ensuring every camera move, scale, and perspective aligns seamlessly with the real world.

Working closely with animation, FX, and lighting teams, you play a key role in ensuring clean, production-ready setups that support downstream departments and maintain pipeline efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Tracking & Reconstruction

• Perform accurate camera tracking and matchmove for live-action plates.
• Reconstruct 3D scenes including cameras, geometry, and basic environments.
• Solve tracking challenges such as motion blur, lens distortion, and occlusions.

Layout & Scene Setup

• Set up layouts for shots, ensuring proper scale, perspective, and continuity.
• Maintain clean, organized scenes aligned with studio pipeline standards.
• Ensure accuracy and consistency across shots and sequences.

Pipeline Collaboration

• Work closely with animation, FX, and lighting teams to ensure smooth handoffs.
• Understand downstream requirements to support efficient production flow.
• Participate in dailies and iterate quickly based on feedback.

Growth & Ownership

• Take increasing ownership of shots, especially at mid-level.
• Apply a detail-oriented and problem-solving mindset to technical challenges.
• Continuously refine tracking accuracy and workflow efficiency.

Qualifications

• 1–5 years of experience in layout or matchmove within VFX or animation.
• Strong understanding of camera mechanics, perspective, and real-world scale.
• Ability to take direction and deliver clean, reliable work.
• Detail-oriented with a strong problem-solving mindset.
• Increasing ability to own and manage shots independently (mid-level).

Requirements

• Proficiency in tools such as 3DEqualizer, PFTrack, or SynthEyes.
• Working knowledge of Maya for scene setup and layout.
• Understanding of lens distortion, camera solving, and object tracking.
• Basic knowledge of the VFX pipeline and downstream workflows.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Lidar or photogrammetry workflows.
• Familiarity with Nuke for projection or basic compositing checks.
