Job Description
Mid-Level Lighting & Rendering Artist
The Lighting & Rendering Artist is responsible for crafting high-quality final imagery that brings shots to completion across film, episodic, and advertising projects.
With a strong eye for light, color, and composition, you shape the final look of each shot—balancing artistic intent with technical precision. Your work ensures renders are visually compelling, efficient, and ready for seamless compositing.
Working closely with Leads, Supervisors, and cross-functional teams, you help maintain visual continuity while delivering production-ready results under tight timelines.
Key Responsibilities
Lighting & Rendering
- Light and render CG shots to achieve high-quality, production-ready results.
- Create and refine lighting setups across sequences, ensuring visual continuity.
- Match lighting and mood to the desired creative vision.
Render Setup & Optimization
- Set up and manage render layers and AOVs for efficient compositing workflows.
- Optimize render settings for both quality and performance on the render farm.
- Ensure renders are clean, consistent, and technically accurate.
Look Development Support
- Perform basic compositing in Nuke to establish final look direction.
- Project matte paintings onto cards or geometry where required.
- Collaborate with DMP, FX, and compositing teams for seamless integration.
Quality Control & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot technical issues in scenes and rendering setups.
- QC renders before delivery to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Prepare work for dailies and iterate efficiently based on feedback.
Collaboration & Mentorship
- Collaborate effectively with Leads, Supervisors, and cross-functional teams.
- Support and mentor junior artists when required.
- Maintain clear communication within production workflows.
Qualifications
- 3–5+ years of production experience in lighting and rendering for VFX or animation.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong understanding of lighting principles, mood, and realism.
- Comfortable balancing visual quality with production timelines.
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and collaborative approach.
Requirements
- Strong experience with Renderman, V-Ray, or similar render engines.
- Working knowledge of Katana and/or Maya or Blender for lighting workflows.
- Proficiency in Nuke for look development and basic compositing.
- Solid understanding of AOVs, render passes, and compositing workflows.
- Good understanding of real-world lighting, materials, and color.
- Ability to troubleshoot scenes and optimize renders effectively.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
Nice to Have
- Photography background or strong visual reference understanding.
- Experience working on feature films or high-end episodic content.
