Job Description
Mid-Level Lookdev / Texturing Artist
The Lookdev / Texturing Artist is responsible for bringing assets to life through high-quality textures and refined surface development.
With a strong eye for realism and material response, you craft visually compelling surfaces that hold up under lighting and across shots. Your work ensures that every asset feels grounded, consistent, and production-ready.
Working closely with modeling, lighting, and compositing teams, you help shape the final look of assets while maintaining both artistic integrity and technical efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Texturing & Surface Creation
- Create high-quality textures for characters, environments, and props using both procedural and hand-painted techniques.
- Develop visually rich and physically accurate surface details.
- Ensure textures align with creative direction and project requirements.
Look Development
- Build and refine physically accurate shaders and material networks.
- Ensure assets respond correctly under various lighting conditions.
- Troubleshoot and optimize shader setups for consistency and performance.
Pipeline & Optimization
- Optimize textures and shaders for render efficiency without compromising visual quality.
- Maintain clean file structures and adhere to pipeline standards.
- Ensure assets are production-ready and compatible across departments.
Collaboration & Ownership
- Take ownership of assets from initial lookdev through final delivery.
- Collaborate closely with modeling, lighting, and compositing teams.
- Support and guide junior artists when required.
Qualifications
- 3โ5+ years of production experience in VFX or animation.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong eye for detail, realism, and surface quality.
- Confidence in building and troubleshooting complex shader networks.
- Reliable, proactive, and comfortable working within production timelines.
Requirements
- Proven experience in look development and texturing.
- Strong understanding of PBR workflows and material response to light.
- Proficiency in Mari, Substance 3D Painter, and Maya.
- Experience with render engines such as Arnold, V-Ray, or Renderman.
- Solid understanding of UV workflows, color theory, and surface detailing.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
